Cross-Country Skiing 

Ski the Northwoods!This winter, glide your way through the forests of Boulder Junction. Cross-Country skiers can choose from some of the best cross-country ski trails in the Northwoods. Ski Boulder Junction’s many groomed and tracked trails for the strider and wide flat trails for the skate skier. Or, head to the deep woods for secluded, ungroomed trails.

Boulder Junction Winter Park (pdf)

This trail offers fun for the entire family. Bring your cross country skis, snowshoes, ice skates, sled or boots and enjoy outdoor winter fun. The cross-country ski and snowshoe trail is cleared and groomed and suitable for beginners, enthusiasts and families. There is also a sledding hill along with a regulation sized ice skating rink equipped with lights.

Escanaba-Pallette Lake Trails (pdf)

11.5 miles Groomed and tracked, very hilly and rolling. Very scenic. Winds around five (5) different lakes, and through stands of maple, balsam and aspen. A couple of steep hills. Shelter and fire ring. INTERMEDIATE. Directions to trail: Take Hwy. M 4 miles south from Boulder Junction. Then turn left onto Nebish Road and go 3.5 miles to the Trailhead.

Madeline Lake Trail (pdf)

9.5 miles Groomed and tracked . Variety of scenery. First half cut over, Second half is older timber. Winds around three (3) lakes. Shelter and fire ring. ALL CLASSES OF SKIERS. (Note: part of this trail will be closed until further notice, due to logging operations). Directions to trail: On Hwy. 47 go southeast from Woodruff 2 miles. Turn left on Hwy. J and go 1 mile. Turn left onto Rudolph Road and go 1.75 miles to the Trailhead.

McNaughton (pdf)

Northwoods Winter Trail10 miles Groomed and tracked. Only trail on which skating is allowed. Scenic trail. Very few steep hills. Variety of timber types and lakes. Shelter and fire ring. BEGINNER. Directions to trail: On Hwy. 47 go south from Woodruff 13 miles. Turn right on Kildeer Road.

Raven Trails (pdf)

11 miles Groomed and tracked. Trail winds through area logged years ago. Inkpot and Clear Lakes can be seen. Couple of steep hills. Shelter and fire ring. INTERMEDIATE. EXPERT TRAIL is 4 miles long. Directions to trail: On Hwy. 47 go southeast from Woodruff 3.5 miles. Turn left on Woodruff Road and go .5 miles.

Lumberjack Trails (pdf)

12.5 miles Ungroomed and untracked. Wilderness trail through many different timber types. Half of trail winds through area logged a few years ago, rest through old timber. Connects to the Escanaba Trail. Backpacking is allowed along the trail. BEGINNER TO INTERMEDIATE. Directions to trail: There are two Trailheads on the Lumberjack. For one take “Old K” east from Boulder Junction to Concora Road. To get to the other, go south from Boulder Junction on Hwy. M and turn left on Hwy. K. Go about 5 miles, just past Nixon Lake Road.

Powell Trail (pdf)

8.5 miles Groomed and tracked by the North Lakeland Discovery Center. Passing by Spring Pond and Sherman Lake, this scenic, easy/beginner trail winds through an area logged off some years ago as well as through an area of older timber types. Leashed pets allowed on this trail when there is no snow.

Shannon Lake Trail (pdf)

Cross-Country Skiing in Boulder Junction7 miles Ungroomed and untracked. Half of trail runs through area logged a few years ago. Remainder meanders through a variety of northern hardwoods. Scenic loop around Shannon Lake. ALL CLASSES OF SKIERS. Directions to trail: On Hwy. 155 go 2.75 miles north from St. Germain to Lost Lake Drive South. Go north 1 block to Found Lake Road. Go 2 miles on Found lake Road to the Trailhead. There is another Trailhead on Hwy G.

North Lakeland Discovery Center Trails (pdf)

Variety of trails. Groomed and tracked. BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED skiers. Directions: rom the intersection of Hwy. 51 and Hwy. W, in Manitowish Waters, continue north of Hwy. W approximately 1.5 miles to the North Lakeland Discovery Center.

Razorback Ridges (pdf)

12 miles Groomed and tracked by the Sayner-Star Lake Lions Club. Scenic trails featuring different terrains for beginner to expert skiers. Directions to trail: From Hwy. M south, turn left on Hwy. N. Continue east on County Hwy N about 5 miles to Razorback Road. Turn north on Razorback Road to parking area.
