Winter “Ski-Skate-Snowshoe” Getaway

The Musky Capital of the World® receives heavy snowfall each winter, making the area trails some of the best in all of Wisconsin. The snow comes early and stays late into the winter, giving Boulder Junction a particularly long season for winter silent sports.

A Boulder Junction “Ski-Skate-Snowshoe” getaway can be quite affordable. A two-night stay in Boulder Junction would cost between $150 and $400 for a family of four. A great selection of resorts, motels, cabins and vacation homes gives you a long list of different lodging options. And Boulder Junction is surrounded by trails, which means you won’t spend your valuable vacation time driving. Here’s what a two night “Ski-Skate-Snowshoe” getaway might look like in Boulder Junction.

Day 1: Arrive in Boulder Junction

2:30pm – Stop at the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce. Pick up maps, trail passes, community information and useful advice. Knowledgeable staff can give you some great suggestions on everything from places to go snowshoeing to the best place to get a cup of cocoa. Sledding in Boulder Junction, WI

3pm – Sledding at Boulder Junction Winter Park. Boulder Junction Winter Park is the perfect place to start your winter getaway. The park features a sledding hill, regulation lighted ice-skating rink, a warming hut and bonfire area. Before the sun goes down, get a few slides down the hill to work up your appetite.

4:30pm – Check into your motel, cabin, resort, cottage or vacation home.

5:30pm – Dinner. Warm hospitality and good food will help take the chill off. Choose from a number of area restaurants.

7:30pm – Go stargazing before heading off to bed. Stargazing in the winter? On a clear winter night, the stars can be spectacular in Boulder Junction. You might even get to see the aurora borealis, a real winter treat.

Day 2: Hit the trails

8am – Breakfast. Fuel up for a day on the trails. Cross Country Skiing in Boulder Junction, WI

9am – Cross-country skiing – Escanaba-Pallette Lake Trails. This groomed and tracked trail features four loops ranging from 2 to 8.5 miles. Rolling hills and great scenery await you as you ski along the shores of several small lakes. To get to the trailhead, take Hwy M for 4 miles south from Boulder Junction, then turn left onto Nebish Road and go 3.5 miles.

Noon – Lunch.

2pm – Snowshoeing – Lumberjack Trail. Choose from a 4.6-mile loop and a 12.5-mile loop on this outstanding snowshoeing trail. You’ll wind through the forest and along the Manitowish River, Fishtrap Flowage and White Sand Lake. To get to the trailhead from downtown Boulder Junction, head south on Hwy K for 1 mile until you reach Concora Road and the parking area.

5pm – Dinner. 6:30pm – Ice Skating at Boulder Junction Winter Park. Head back to Boulder Junction Winter Park for an evening glide across the ice. The park’s regulation-sized skating rink is lighted. And if you get chilly, head to the warming hut.

8pm – Off to bed.

Day 3: Head home
