Boulder Junction Public Library “Art in the Library” January/February Exhibit – Mary Van Grinsven
January 8 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
The Boulder Junction Public Library welcomes the public to view their upcoming “Art in the Library” exhibit. The Library Art Committee and Board of Trustees selected Mary Van Grinsven for the January/February exhibit. Her quilts will be on display in several locations throughout the library.
Mary began quilting in 1983 when a friend asked if she wanted to take a beginning quilt class together. Starting with baby quilts and then quilts for every bed in her house, quilting blossomed into a lifelong love of fabric, color and design. In the early 90’s, Mary began to teach quilt classes and by 2000, was also teaching color theory classes and accepting commissioned work.
Once every bed in her house was covered (with a few extras in the closet), Mary turned toward creating art quilts and useful gifts for family and friends.
In her professional life, Mary was an international gymnastic judge and served 16 years on the United States executive board for the National Association of Women’s Gymnastic Judges. Moving six times with her husband’s career at John Deere, she was able to share her love of quilting with many others in various parts of the U.S. and Canada.
After vacationing with her husband and two sons in the Boulder Junction area for the past 42 years, they bought the family home from her parents and moved here permanently upon retirement in 2011.
Mary is currently a member of a local quilt group called the “Material Girls” and enjoys participating in and teaching quilting in the Northwoods. She also leads the artistic efforts at St. Anne Church in Boulder Junction and can be found volunteering in several organizations in our community.
Mary would like to thank her dear friend, Lisa Arndt (long arm quilter) for making many of her creations come to life with her beautiful thread artistry.
