DESCRIPTION:Join Discovery Center’s Jenna and Don on a wilderness paddle down the Brule River near Long Lake\, WI! This is an exclusive outdoor experience featuring pristine river landscapes\, an overnight stay on private property and camp-cooked meals by Discovery Center staff! Paddling experience is necessary due to class I-II rapids we will experience on this route. Paddle length is approximately 15 miles\, however the river flows steadily and this paddle experience involves more steering than paddling. An optional hiking opportunity is available on the day following the paddle along an old railroad grade. \nPlease be prepared to bring your breakfast and lunch on Day 1 (Tuesday)\, including any ample snacks you may need during the duration of the trip. Dinner on Tuesday will be provided\, as well as breakfast on Wednesday morning. Participants must bring their own trip supplies including\, but not limited to: tent\, sleeping pads\, comfortable attire\, footwear\, snacks\, and water bottle(s). Participants may bring their own watercraft/PFDs/paddles\, although this gear may be provided for you by request. \nLess experienced paddler? No problem! Contact Jenna at jenna@discoverycenter.net or Don Anderson at don@discoverycenter.net to discuss a time to meet with you and get you comfortable out on the water before taking the trip. We hope you can join us! \nAll registered participants will receive detailed information regarding meeting site\, necessary supplies\, and program specifics in the days prior to the event date. Transportation will be provided from the Discovery Center. Registration is required by 8/29/26. DESCRIPTION:Join a Discovery Center Naturalist for a guided hike on the trails at the North Lakeland Discovery Center as we explore the forest during its transition from summer to fall. Discover how plants\, wildlife\, and the forest ecosystem change as the seasons shift. This hike will cover approximately 2 miles through the bog-board walk loop. \nRegistration is required by 9/10/26. Free for Members\, $10/Non-Member and $5/Ages 4 – 12. SUMMARY:Soy Wax Batik and Dyeing Workshop at NLDC
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will learn the basics of batik. Soy wax will be used to batik a pattern onto fabric or cloth napkins. Once the wax has been applied\, the fabric will be overdyed with a thickened dye in a contrasting color. Each participant will “Batik” 4 fabric fat quarters or cloth napkins. The instructor will provide all the materials and supplies. When registering\, please indicate whether you want cloth napkins or plain fabric. Fabric can be used to make pillows\, used in quilts\, made into book covers\, etc. \nSpace is limited and registration is required by 9/15/26. $40/Member and $45/Non-Member.  Thursday\, 9/17/2026\, 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM.

SUMMARY:Black River Harbor Geology Expedition with NLDC
DESCRIPTION:The Discovery Center welcomes you to explore the wild and scenic Black River Byway’s five incredible waterfalls. Geologist Mike Porter and Discovery Center staff will embark on a journey with participants to discover the geological significance of these unique waterfalls found along the Black River as the river flows toward Lake Superior. Along the way\, we’ll uncover the plant and animal life that thrives in these rugged\, water-carved landscapes. \nEach waterfall is reached by a short walk with stair access. After our waterfall adventure\, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch at Black River Harbor. After lunch\, we will take a leisurely half-mile stroll along the shoreline to view Superior’s influence on beach development before returning to the Discovery Center. \nParticipants should bring along comfortable hiking attire (including shoes)\, hiking poles (don’t worry\, we can supply those for you if you don’t have any)\, snacks\, ample water for the day\, and their lunch. \n\n\n\nRegistration required by 9/12/26.  Registered participants will be contacted via email with more information on this program.  $65/Member and $75/Non-Member.  Tuesday\, 9/15/2026\, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
