DESCRIPTION:LOLA Arts is honored to present a special evening of poetry featuring Denise “Dee” Sweet\, former Poet Laureate of Wisconsin and current Poet Laureate of the city of Bayfield. The reading will take place on Thursday\, May 7th at 6:00 PM at LOLA Arts\, 4262 County Rd B\, Land O’ Lakes\, WI. \nDenise “Dee” Sweet (Anishinaabe\, White Earth) is an acclaimed poet\, educator\, and community organizer whose work spans decades of literary and cultural contribution. A faculty emerita of the University of Wisconsin System\, Sweet taught Humanistic Studies\, Creative Writing\, and First Nations Studies from 1985 to 2010. In addition to her literary career\, Sweet works as a memory care advocate and coordinator\, supporting elders living with memory loss. \nA widely published poet\, her collections include Know By Heart (Rhiannon Press)\, Songs For Discharming (Greenfield Press)\, Days of Obsidian\, Days of Grace (Poetry Harbor)\, and Nitaawichige (Poetry Harbor). Her most recent collection\, Palominos Near Tuba City (Holy Cow! Press\, 2018)\, received Honorable Mention from the Wisconsin Council of Writers. Her work has been recognized with numerous honors\, including the Wisconsin Posner Award for Poetry and the Diane Decorah Award from the Native Writers’ Circle of the Americas. In\n2004\, she was appointed Wisconsin Poet Laureate by Governor James Doyle\, becoming the state’s second laureate. \n“We wanted to make this event free to the public with only a suggested donation of $10\,” says Audrey Lindemann\, Media Coordinator for LOLA Arts\, “so that this important cultural event wouldn’t be cost prohibitive to anybody.” \nThis event is open to the public\, and all are encouraged to attend for an evening of powerful\, reflective\, and culturally rich poetry.

DESCRIPTION:Bike Swap and FREE Safety Rodeo\nGet Hooked on Biking in Boulder Junction! \nThe Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce and the local cycling community invite you to a Bike Swap and FREE Safety Rodeo on Saturday\, May 23rd from 11 AM – 2 PM. These two separate events will be held at the Boulder Junction Community Center. The aim is to raise funds and awareness for the trails in Boulder Junction\, a central and historic part of the paved 52-mile Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail system that connects five communities in the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest. This is your chance to find good deals on bikes\, learn\, and meet others who are enthusiastic about cycling. \nBike Swap – Inside the Community Center\nSale Hours: 11 AM – 2 PM\nFor sellers: The swap is for both used and new bikes. Used bikes must be clean and in good working condition. Bring your bike(s) to the Community Center on the morning of the event between 8-10 AM for drop off and to sign a release form. Sellers determine the sale price of their bike(s)\, including the asking price and the lowest accepted price. Sellers are encouraged to visit Bicycle Blue Book before setting their prices. Sellers should review\, print\, and fill out the Seller Agreement and Bike Intake Form and bring with the bicycle(s). Forms will be available day-of as well. 20% of each sale’s proceeds will be retained as commission to benefit the maintenance of the Boulder Junction bike trails. Any bikes not sold must be picked up at 2 PM. \nFor buyers: The swap is for both used and new bikes. Used bikes will be clean and in good working condition. Doors open at 11 AM. Cash or credit accepted. Additional cycling gear will not be sold\, but a free gear table will be available. Coontail will be on-site with a preview of their bike inventory for demonstration. Coffee and baked goods from the Boulder Junction Coffee Shop will be available for purchase. \nSafety Rodeo – Outside the Community Center – FREE\nRodeo: 1 – 2 PM\nThe rodeo is for ages 4 to adult. Children must be able to ride on their own. It will be fun and educational! Do you know how to pump your tires effectively? How about the rules of the road? And where most accidents happen? Join us to find out.\nThe rodeo includes the following stations: \n\nbike maintenance\npre-ride safety checks (e.g. helmet fitting\, brake checks)\nbalance skills and games\nspecific safety skills training including:\n\nstart and stop\nsignals and scans\nobstacle avoidance\ndriveway and mid-block exits\ntraffic signs and intersections\n\n\n\nBring your bicycle and helmet. Families are welcome!\nYou may register in advance by filling out the online form. Walk-in registrations are accepted at 12:30 PM. All rodeo participants must sign a rodeo waiver form. Participants are encouraged to print and fill out the waiver and bring to check-in but forms will also be available on-site. Children under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a safety waiver before participating. In the event of rain\, the rodeo will still be held outdoors\, under cover. Upon completion of the Safety Rodeo\, participants will recieve a certificate that can be taken to the Ice Shanty for a free small soft serve\, to Boulder Jct.
