NLDC A Tale of Two Moraines: Ice Margin Influence on Topography & Geology at the Lumberjack Trails
September 17 @ 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm
The Winegar Moraine is a glacial deposit widely distributed across Vilas County. Near Boulder Junction, these glacial deposits have variations in character that highlight the dynamic nature of the glacial margin. This trip will examine the influence on landscape topography by the last advance of the Ontonagon Lobe of the Wisconsin Ice Sheet, and contrast two moraine positions exposed along the Lumberjack Trail System near White Sand Lake. Hike time will be 75 minutes, easy to moderate level. Our leader, Mike Porter, is a UW-Madison Geology graduate and a sedimentary geologist with 33 years in worldwide petroleum exploration and development. He is now interested in the interrelationships of geology with the flora and fauna in the Northwoods. Directions to the trailhead will be emailed to registered participants. Register by September 15. $40 ($35 members). Face masks will be required for this program.
