Stitching Continents Together: The Phenomenon of Bird Migration-Free Video Recording
August 4 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Boulder Junction Public Library Presents “Stitching Continents Together: The Phenomenon of Bird Migration” With Naturalist, Author and Nature Guide, John Bates -Free Video Recording
The Boulder Junction Public Library had to cancel all summer programming due to Covid-19, but could not bear the thought of a summer without a talk with Naturalist, Author and Nature Guide, John Bates, who has been an annual guest speaker for the past 18 years. The library was thrilled when John agreed to record a video talk that the library has put on their YouTube channel for everyone to view for free.
John’s talk is titled “Stitching Continents Together: The Phenomenon of Bird Migration”. Every autumn over 5 billion birds from nearly 500 species migrate across the northern hemisphere. In northern Wisconsin, the fierce winters force most breeding birds to seek warmer climes or risk death. Where do they go? How do they navigate? What are the risks? Where can someone witness some of the greatest migrations in action? Come gain a deeper insight and appreciation for the wonders of migration! This is the link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We5YDatDf60&feature=youtu.be
John Bates is the author of nine books on the Northwoods and Upper Midwest, and a contributor to seven others. John has been featured on Wisconsin Public Television several times and has been a frequent guest on Wisconsin Public Radio. He has worked as a state forest naturalist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and owns Trails North, a naturalist guide service. He also conducts outdoor classes for the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin, Nicolet College, the North Lakeland Discovery Center, and many others. For twenty-eight years he has written a biweekly column, “A Northwoods Almanac,” for the Lakeland Times in Minocqua, Wisconsin.
John would love to answer any questions the virtual public has. Questions can be sent to John’s email address at the end of the video or to the library at [email protected] For more information, please call the library at 715-385-2050.
