High Speed Broadband Coming Soon!
October 7, 2020
The Town of Boulder Junction and CenturyLink have signed an agreement to bring fiber optic Highspeed Broadband to 745 homes and businesses. The signing of the agreement completes the public/private partnership among Boulder Junction, CenturyLink, and the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC), which earlier in 2020 awarded a $1,624,094 grant to CenturyLink for the Boulder Junction project. With speeds from 100Mbps to 1Gbps, Boulder Junction will be one of very few communities in the Northwoods with such technology. This technology is critical to growing and diversifying its economy and attracting remote workers, new and expanding businesses, and growing families while sustaining and strengthening existing tourism-based businesses and the area’s retirees.
The project kicked off on September 15, 2020, with Boulder Junction’s sign up and marketing campaign through a new website, social media, direct mailing, banners, and an email campaign. The campaign’s goal is to sign up as many residents and stakeholders as possible for CenturyLink’s fiber optic Internet service. The Town’s broadband website is www.boulderbroadband.com.
“This Highspeed Broadband project is a great undertaking for Boulder Junction.” said Town Chairman, Dennis Reuss. “Getting this service in place is critical to develop the next generation of Boulder Junction.” Reuss says further, “COVID-19 has necessitated the need for Highspeed Broadband for a large portion of our stakeholders, especially new remote workers and students, who had to switch to virtual learning.”
CenturyLink expects to begin construction in October 2020 and complete the project in 2021. Boulder Junction is beginning to develop plans for Phase 2 to bring Highspeed Broadband to the remaining Town’s homes and businesses. The Wisconsin PSC has budgeted another $24million in 2021 for Broadband projects in the state with the application deadline on December 1, 2020. Boulder Junction plans to apply for a second PSC grant in 2021 to complete the Town in a Phase 2 project.
Supervisor Laura Bertch says, “Boulder Junction has really supported this project. Having this service is crucial to so many different people for different reasons. Having Highspeed Broadband will set Boulder Junction apart and make it very attractive to new residents and businesses while increasing our property values!”
“It is imperative all property owners/tenants and businesses wanting Highspeed Broadband in Phase 1 and 2 sign-up for installation by October 31, 2020, and then subsequently for CenturyLink’s service as installation of the fiber optic cable and electronics in their homes and businesses nears.” said Jim Galloway, Chair of the Boulder Junction Highspeed Broadband Expansion Committee. “CenturyLink’s monthly service cost is very competitive compared to competitors.”
