Albino Deer in Boulder Junction

deer1Boulder Junction is home to an unusual number of albino deer. The recessive gene that causes albinism in white-tailed deer is very rare. The chances of an albino deer are one in 20,000, making Boulder Junction’s herd of “Ghost Deer” all the more amazing. Residents and visitors sometimes see these shy woodland creatures along the trails and in the secluded woodlands of the Boulder Junction area.

deer2Recently, the Wisconsin Public Television program, “In Wisconsin” featured the area’s albino deer. Watch the video.

Due to its hard-to-miss coat color, an albino deer is particularly susceptible to attack from predators. But their white coat makes them unmistakable amid a herd of normal colored deer. If you’re lucky enough to see one, you’ll remember it for the rest of your life.

deer1Fortunately, albino deer are protected from hunting in Wisconsin, and they are certainly revered by the Boulder Junction community. When you’re visiting the area, be sure to ask knowledgeable locals if they’ve spotted any of the area’s white deer lately - they might be able to point you in the right direction for a better chance of seeing one of Boulder Junction’s beautiful white deer.
