Manitowish River Paddling Trip 1: High Lake to Fishtrap Dam

June 6, 2022

Looking for a nice day trip paddling? Look no other than this paddling route from High Lake to the Fishtrap Dam. The last portion of this paddling trip will take you downstream the Manitowish River. This river is a great place to view local bird species. Eagles, Blue herons, Sandhill cranes, and a variety of duck species are found dwelling along this route. There are also several beaver dams along this route, so try to spot them as you meander your way down to Fishtrap Dam.

Put your watercraft at the High Lake boat landing on the south side of Hwy. B. The small creek leads to High Lake. Travel southwest through a culvert into Fishtrap Lake. Once through Fishtrap, the river meanders past Johnson and Nixon tributary creeks. Take out at the portage just upstream from the Fishtrap Dam. The 7.5-mile segment could be a day trip or an overnight trip, as there are several boat-in only campsites along this route. Total paddling time is 4 hours.
