Cross-Country Ski Report

March 17, 2022

**Due to warm conditions, many trail systems listed below have suspended grooming for the season. If you choose to ski, it is advised to bring ‘B’ skis, as most trails are in fair to poor condition.**

BOULDER JUNCTION WINTER PARK: Open for ice skating (rink lit until 10:30pm), sledding, snowshoeing and dog walking. Cross-country skiing is permissible, but the trail is not tracked.

ESCANABA TRAILS: Monday, 3/07 – Trails are groomed for classic cross-country skiing. We received freezing rain, rain, and a light coating of snow over the weekend. All loops were cut three times to chop up and mix the ice and hard snow base and then tracked. Light snow falling while the trail was being groomed left a coat of fresh snow on the green loop and part of the blue loop (it stopped snowing before grooming was complete). Good conditions. Likely quite fast.

LUMBERJACK TRAILS: Tuesday, 3/08 –  Trails are groomed (corduroy/levelled) for snowshoe, fat biking, and cross-country skiing. Blue loop leveled/groomed. Good conditions.

MADELINE TRAILS: Monday, 3/07- Trails are groomed for classic cross-country skiing.  All loops have been cut and single tracked. Varying track depths and scattered debris throughout all the loops. The base is very hard due to freezing rain over the weekend.

MCNAUGHTON TRAILS: Monday, 3/07 – Trails are groomed for classic cross-country skiing and were groomed (corduroy/levelled). All loops have been cut three times and tracked. The skater’s loop was cut and groomed. The tracks are varying depths and there is scattered debris throughout all the loops. The base is very hard due to freezing rain over the weekend.

RAVEN TRAILS: Monday, 3/07 – Trails are groomed for classic cross-country skiing. All loops have been cut several times and left untracked. Mostly cutting up old track and fixing postholes from foot traffic. Grooming may commence should conditions improve.

NORTH LAKELAND DISCOVERY CENTER: Monday, 2/28 –   Our trails are open, and our groomer was out early on Saturday, February 26th, to groom and track (classic ski) the trails!  The trails are currently in great condition and we hope you will stop out and enjoy the beautiful Northwoods!

NORTH LAKELAND SCHOOL TRAILS: Monday, 3/07 – Trails were groomed and tracked today after the freezing rain, rain, snow event last weekend.  Conditions are reported to be fair to good in most areas.  There is ice underneath the thin layer of new snow making the track a bit spotty.

WIN MAN TRAILS: Thursday, 3/17 – Ski Trails are open for skate and classic skiing. Conditions are certainly Spring like in terms of skiing condition with a soft deck. Our base is holding up well but given limited ability to assess the constantly changing conditions recommending “B” skis.

Fat Tire Biking Trails are closed. Due to icy and thawing conditions.

Snowshoe trails are open. Snowshoeing remains good throughout the trail system.

RAZORBACK RIDGES: Wednesday, 3/15 – All grooming has been suspended. Skiers are welcome to continue skiing with ungroomed conditions.
