Cross-Country Ski Report

March 22, 2023

With a variety of ski trails to explore in our area, the cross-country ski trail exploration is seemingly limitless!

BOULDER JUNCTION WINTER PARK:

Open for ice-skating (rink lit up until 10:30pm), snowshoeing, sledding, and dog-walking. Cross-country skiing is permitted, however the trail is not tracked.

ESCANABA TRAILS:

Saturday, 3/18 – A couple inches of new snow over a hard, icy base. Yellow and green loops cut and tracked this morning. Varying track quality due to the hard base, but overall good conditions. NOTE: Only yellow and green loops are open and groomed at this time. Outer red/blue loop is closed due to logging.

LUMBERJACK TRAILS:

Wednesday, 3/15 – Blue loop groomed / leveled. Springtime conditions.

MADELINE LAKE TRAILS:

Saturday, 3/18 – The trail received 1″-2″ of fresh snow. All loops were cut, groomed, and tracked. Expect shallow track in areas throughout the trail system. Good conditions overall.

MCNAUGHTON TRAILS:

Saturday, 3/18 – The trail received 1″-2″ of fresh snow. All loops were cut, groomed, and tracked and the skater’s loop was cut and groomed. Expect shallow track in areas throughout the trail system. Good conditions overall.

NORTH LAKELAND DISCOVERY CENTER:

Thursday, 3/02 – Our trails are in great winter condition after the last snowfall and were groomed on 3/2/23.  Our classic cross-country ski trails were also freshly tracked!

NORTH LAKELAND SCHOOL TRAILS:

Monday, 3/20 – Trails were groomed and tracked today and are in pretty good shape.  This will be the last roll/groom/track of the 2022-23 season.

RAVEN TRAILS:

Saturday, 3/18 – Around an inch of new snow over a hard, icy base. All loops cut and tracked this morning. Varying track quality due to the hard base. Quite a bit of debris on portions of the yellow and red loops under thick conifers. Overall good conditions.

RAZORBACK RIDGES:

Tuesday, 3/14 – We’ve got plenty of snow, but as of this week we are suspending grooming for the remainder of the season. It’s partly because I’ve had to shut down about 80 percent of the classic loops and half the skate loops because of logging projects that have just begun in those areas on state forest land. In addition, I had a groomer breakdown last Saturday for which we will be unable to get the replacement part for at least a week. That said, it was a long and great ski season. Hope to see everyone back out on the trails next winter.

WINMAN TRAILS:

Wednesday, 3/22 – Ski trails are open. We received less than 0.5″ overnight. With temperatures today being a little warmer (currently 32° at 9:00am) and trail conditions still being very good overall, we will not be grooming.

We will groom the entire system again early Thursday morning and conditions should be excellent on Thursday and Friday morning until temperatures rise. We plan to groom again on Saturday morning so things are in great condition for the weekend.

Snowshoe trails are open. Snowshoe continues to be a solid choice. Beautiful forests with abundant snow and some great views.

Fat tire biking trails are open. Trails firmed up really well over the weekend and got some good tracks on them early this week. With the light snow, grip should be fantastic if temperatures do not rise too much today. Thursday and early morning Friday through Sunday should be great.
