Spring Songbirds
March 19, 2023
You can hear their songs the moment you enter the forest. Boulder Junction is home to a variety of beautiful songbirds. Some spend the winter here, others head South during the colder months. Fortunately for us, they’re returning—and more are arriving daily. It’s a great time to put on comfortable walking shoes and take a stroll in search of avian species. Here are some local areas you can spotbirds around Boulder Junction this spring.
- The 25-acre Trout Lake Conifer Swamp, located south of Boulder Junction, is a superb place to find warbler species.
- The Escanaba-Pallette Lake Trail offers woodland hiking options that will take you near the shorelines of Escanaba and Pallette Lakes – These shoreline segments of the trails are a great option if you’re seeking sights of waterfowl.
- The Lumberjack Trail is a great option near town. There are a couple of longer loop options through dense forest and wetlands. A bridge over Nixon Creek is less than a mile from the trailhead and is an open viewing spot of the Alder thickets. Jays, warblers, and waterfowl can be spotted here.
- The Fallison Lake Nature Trail winds through a mixed-forest around 53-acre Fallison Lake. It’s a nice walk and a perfect place to bring your binoculars. There are benches along the trail to post up and take your bird book out to identify bird species you’ve spotted along the trail.
