3 trails to try this winter in Northern Wisconsin

November 24, 2025

Boulder Junction, located in the heart of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, is home to some truly outstanding trails that are the perfect place for an outdoor adventure this winter. Here are three great routes you should try on your next visit.

Snowshoeing: Fallison Lake Trail

This scenic trail system located about 9 miles south of downtown Boulder Junction includes trail loops from a little over half a mile to 2.34 miles and provides outstanding views along the shores of Fallison Lake. (The shortest trail, the Yellow Trail, also includes informational signage about the area’s ecology and native species.) The trail system is part of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, but a state trail pass is not required for snowshoeing.

Cross-Country Skiing: Escanaba-Pallette Lake Trails

Located about 8 miles south of Boulder Junction in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, the Escanaba-Pallette Lake trail system offers loops ranging from 2 to 8.5 miles that are groomed for classic skating. This hilly and scenic trail system winds along the shores of Escanaba Lake, Pallette Lake, and Lost Canoe Lake, and there is a shelter and fire ring on site. A Wisconsin State Trail Pass is required for cross-country skiing.

Ice Skating: The Glide

A recent addition to Boulder Junction’s Winter Park, The Glide is a 0.8-mile ice skating ribbon that surrounds the park and offers an exciting new way to explore the Northwoods of Wisconsin. The Glide is free and open to the public from 10am to 10pm when conditions allow. There are a limited number of skates available on site, and Coontail in downtown Boulder Junction also offers rentals. Stay up to date on trail conditions here.
