Fabulous spring fishing

March 31, 2021

Fishing season is almost here! Boulder Junction is a classic fishing destination, located in the heart of the Northwoods of Wisconsin. We’re known as the Musky Capital of the World®, but there’s far more to this beautiful destination than trophy-sized musky. Boulder Junction is home to beautiful forests, outstanding lodging and restaurants that make a fishing getaway complete. Here are a few tips to get the most out of your spring fishing getaway to Vilas County.

Mark your calendar

The spring fishing opener is in early May. Lodging is filling up fast, so make your reservations today! Anglers will find plenty of welcoming, high-quality lodging—see a full list here. Some of these properties are right on the water, and none are far from world-class fishing.

Gear up

Need some bait and tackle? Head to Northern Highland Sports. They offer a complete selection of outdoor gear, so you can find everything you need for the lake—or your time on shore. The store is located right on Main Street in the heart of Boulder Junction.

Find a guide

Here’s a tip that will ensure a bigger catch (and probably a better time): hire a guide. Boulder Junction has some of the best guides in northern Wisconsin. They are more than happy to share their expertise and will pass on knowledge you’ll be able to use for the rest of your fishing days. Find more information on fishing guides here.

Pick a lake

Finding a great fishing spot around Boulder Junction is easy—there are nearly 200 lakes within a 10-mile drive of downtown. You’ll find small, undeveloped lakes as well as bigger waters like 3,800-acre Trout Lake.
