Close Encounters of the Steam-Powered Kind

The Boulder Junction Public Library and the Boulder Junction Area Historical Society bring back the OurStory Monthly History Series for 2026. OurStory highlights local history or an area of interest that helps us remember the past, understand how it impacts our present, and preserve these memories for the future.

On Thursday, June 25, author and editor John Zimm presents on his extensive research on a series of airship sightings that occurred in Wisconsin and around the nation in 1896 & 1897. Six years before the Wright Brothers completed their famous flight at Kitty Hawk, cigar-shaped airships were seen in the skies over Wisconsin traveling at improbable speeds, fascinating and baffling observers. Come hear Zimm tell stories from the sightings and hear some theories about what people might have seen.
