Heart of Vilas County Paved Bike Trail System
Explore the boundless beauty of the Northwoods on this 52-mile trail that stretches from St. Germain to Mercer, including a segment that passes through Boulder Junction. This is an easy-to-ride paved trail that passes through some truly beautiful Northwoods scenery, including the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest and several Northwoods lakes. Riders can access the trail at several spots in Boulder Junction, including outside the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce.
About 15 miles from downtown Boulder Junction you’ll find some of the best mountain bike trails in the Northwoods. Spanning 1,300 acres of private and public land, the WinMan trails offer miles of well-maintained single track that’s perfect for riders of all ages. A comfortable warming shelter on site has changing rooms and bathrooms.
Rustic Road 60 to Sayner-Star Lake
In search of a longer scenic trip? Hop on your road bike in downtown Boulder Junction to start this nearly 35-mile loop. Head south on Highway M until you reach Highway K, also known as Rustic Road 60. Head east, and you’ll pass several beautiful Vilas County lakes, including White Sand Lake, Lost Canoe Lake, White Birch Lake and Ballard Lake. When you reach Star Lake, head south on Highway N, follow the road through Sayner until you again hit Highway M to return to Boulder Junction.
This trail, located between the Manitowish River and White Sand Lake just outside of Boulder Junction, offers mountain biking loops of 4.6 or 12.5 miles through the Northwoods. A Wisconsin state trail pass is required for biking. Parking is available on Concora Road west of White Sand Lake or Highway K east of White Sand Lake.
