Img 4877Boulder Junction is home to Wisconsin’s largest herd of albino deer.

The albino deer herd of Boulder Junction is one of Wisconsin’s great natural treasures. Sometimes referred to as white deer or ghost deer, these white-tailed deer are true albinos, exhibiting pure white coats as well as pink noses, ears, eyes, and hooves.

Seeing one of Boulder Junction’s albino deer is an unforgettable experience. During the spring, summer, and fall, the bright coloration of these white deer makes them easy to spot among the forest foliage. During the winter, the coloring of albino deer blends in with the snowy surroundings, making them appear as ghosts moving across the landscape. Here are some tips on how to spot a white deer on your next trip to Boulder Junction:

  1. Look at dawn and dusk. The best time to spot a ghost deer is when they are on the move: good bets are at dawn and dusk when the deer search for food.
  2. Explore Trails. Head to where these creatures live—the forest. Boulder Junction is home to some great trails that will take you deep into the forest while keeping you on public land. A good trail near Boulder Junction is the Lumberjack Trail.
  3. Find other deer. White deer appear special and unique to humans, but as far as they are concerned, they are just deer. You’ll see them mingling with common whitetail deer, so if you spot a brown deer, keep looking. A ghost deer could be nearby.
  4. Heads up & enjoy the adventure! Keep your eyes open. You may spot your first white deer deep in the forest, or you may see it cutting through our downtown or wandering on the back lawn of our lodging properties. Just make sure your camera is ready and then relax and enjoy the scenery!
