Find our entire I am Boulder Junction series here.

With over 190 lakes, thousands of miles of state forest, 52 miles of paved bike trail, and 70 miles of groomed snowmobile trails – Boulder Junction is the mecca of outdoor recreation. Our locals share some of their favorite things to do for a fun outdoor adventure!

Why is Boulder Junction a great place for outdoor adventures?

Judy Tegtmeyer | CEO, Camp Manito-wish: I am an avid cyclist so the bike trails are great. Also, I love to mountain bike so between that and fat tire biking it is fantastic with the trails both on and off road. I also love cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and just hiking; it’s all right at your fingertips, you just walk out your door and there are plentiful opportunities of things to do outside.

Don Zander | President, Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club: It is a great destination spot for anyone to come up here and have a good time. Of course, snowmobiling in the wintertime but there is room for all these great activities. Come up here and have a good time, it’s a great spot to be.

Patrick Downs | Owner, Mad Dog Jake’s: The paved bike trail is the first thing that comes to mind, we have a lot of bicyclists that come into the shop. Winter Park is a great place to go hiking and there are so many campgrounds around town. Whether it is a summer camp, state park, or Camp Holiday. There is so much available to do.

Bill Sherer | Owner, We Tie It Fly Shop: I had a customer question me about coming up to visit and he wanted to know if he needed to bring bear bells or spray with him. I told him that the chances are the bears aren’t going to be much of an issue, but people look at this community as being that wild. That is really great, that is what we want. We want them to forget everything about their daily lives and be in some place that gives them that sense of wilderness.

Curtis Cecchi | Owner, Fox Valley Outdoors Guide Service: Obviously being a fishing guide I am definitely biased toward the fishing. The Boulder Junction area is probably one of the best destinations in North America of multi-species angling. Our typical species that a lot of people come up here to target are musky, walleye, small mouth, and pike but on top of that there is fantastic pan fishing, opportunity to fish for sturgeon, all three species of trout, and within about an hour and half you can be on Lake Superior. I could just go on just about it being one of the best places in the world to freshwater fish.

Josie Allen | President, Boulder Junction Area Historical Society: There is just so much to do up here!
