Black River Harbor Geology Expedition with NLDC

The Discovery Center welcomes you to explore the wild and scenic Black River Byway’s five incredible waterfalls. Geologist Mike Porter and Discovery Center staff will embark on a journey with participants to discover the geological significance of these unique waterfalls found along the Black River as the river flows toward Lake Superior. Along the way, we’ll uncover the plant and animal life that thrives in these rugged, water-carved landscapes.

Each waterfall is reached by a short walk with stair access. After our waterfall adventure, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch at Black River Harbor. After lunch, we will take a leisurely half-mile stroll along the shoreline to view Superior’s influence on beach development before returning to the Discovery Center.

Participants should bring along comfortable hiking attire (including shoes), hiking poles (don’t worry, we can supply those for you if you don’t have any), snacks, ample water for the day, and their lunch.
