Boulder Junction’s Boating Lakes

November 20, 2023

Looking for a casual boat ride in northern Wisconsin? Luckily, the Northwoods is home to a lot of beautiful options. In fact, there are 194 lakes to choose from in our corner of Vilas County, including larger lakes suitable for a family cruise in a pontoon boat and smaller lakes better for canoe and kayak excursions. Here are a few accessible Boulder Junction lakes that provide a classic Northwoods boating experience:

Boulder Lake

A great choice for boating, Boulder Lake is located on the northwest side of downtown Boulder Junction. This 516-acre lake has lots of small bays and inlets to explore. There’s a boat landing on the north side of the lake located on Airport Road.

White Sand Lake

This 746-acre lake is worth visiting for the drive there—it’s located off County Hwy K, Vilas County’s only Rustic Road. The lake’s water is incredibly clear, and the lake is surrounded by dense forest. You’ll find lake access off of County Hwy K on the lake’s south side.

North and South Trout Lakes

If you traveled North to get to Boulder Junction, you probably noticed this picturesque beauty. This 3,864-acre is a great lake to traverse by boat with its two large basins, North and South, to explore. There are three boat landings on Trout Lake: two of these are located on the North and South ends of Lake Shore Drive, and there is an additional boat landing located right off of County Hwy M North. Expert tip: This lake is a great lake for sunset viewing!
