I am Boulder Junction: Family-friendly Fun
July 22, 2026
Meet the people who make Boulder Junction a great place to live, play, and stay. “I Am Boulder Junction” highlights the stories and personalities of our local business owners and community members and the welcoming spirit and boundless enthusiasm for the Northwoods you’ll find on your next visit here.
In our latest I Am Boulder Junction video some of our locals share the activities that bring generations together in the Northwoods, from our community sports park to horseback riding or skating The Glide. We have family-friendly activities year-round.
What are your favorite family-friendly activities in Boulder Junction?
- Mary Jones, executive director, Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce: “Ice cream! We have two fantastic icecream parlors in town, with Mad Dog Jake’s or the Ice Shanty. The Ice Shanty also has a fantastic min-golf course.”
- Carol Ashley, owner, Northern Highland Sports: “I see the family generations come year after year, and I think that is what makes this area very special.”
- Ian Brown, owners, Boulder Jct. Brewing. Co: “Family camp at Camp Manito-wish. I started taking my kids there to get a feel for what camp was like before they were campers. Horseback riding, archery, rifles,…all the camp things and you can do it as a family.”
- Larry Voss, owner, Boulder Beer Bar: “What they’ve done with the playground brings families here to experience the outdoors.”
- Amanda Chartrand, marketing manager, Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce: “Go to Grassy Creek Ranch! A lot of people are surprised to hear that we have horseback riding in the middle of the state forest.”
- Erv Keller, owner, Erv Keller Guide Service: “Fishing and biking!”
- Blake Borgstede, owner, Boulder Beer Bar: “Everything over at the community sports park is beyond impressive. We have one of the most tenacious parks boards that you can find in a town this small.”
- Bill Karaffa, owner, Firemouth Pottery & Gallery: “Silent sports have exploded in the Northwoods, and from what I see Boulder Junction is a hub for the bike trail, that has to be one of the largest draws to the area. There are so many things developing year-round, and it comes down to both motor and motorless activities. It’s not like someone can’t find something to do.”
