Recreate, Boulder Junction Style
May 2, 2022
One of the best times of year to enjoy Boulder Junction is fast approaching. The forests and lakes will soon be coming to life and the trails will soon be open for warm-weather recreation. It’s time to start dreaming! If you’re planning a spring trip, here are four Boulder Junction places to recreate:
Bike the Heart from Boulder Junction to Trout Lake
Looking for a smooth, picturesque ride? Look no further than the Heart of Vilas County Paved Bike Trail System. You can pick up the trail behind the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center on Highway M. (Be sure to stop in to say hi and pick up maps and information.) About 5 miles south of Boulder Junction, you’ll come across Trout Lake. Head to Cathedral Point Lane to take in the beautiful vistas. Continue south if you wish for more beautiful views – the entire trail runs nearly 50 miles!
Hike (or Run) the Escanaba-Pallette Lake Trail
One of the more scenic trails around Boulder Junction is located about 7 miles south of town. The rolling Escanaba-Pallette Lake Trail winds through forests and around picturesque lakes. The trail is perfect for a hike, and it’s also great for trail runners looking for some loop options. You’ll find the trailhead off Nebish Lake Road (just off of County M).
Paddle White Sand Lake to Trout River
For a beautiful paddle on some undeveloped water, launch your boat at White Sand Lake, north of Highway K. A portage will take you to Lost Canoe Lake and if you wish, on to Escanaba Lake, which is completely undeveloped. Lost Canoe is considered a State Natural Area; expect pristine waters on this paddling route, folks! See more specific paddling details and route options here.
Mountain Bike the Lumberjack Trail
The Lumberjack Trail is a fantastic place to go for a mountain bike trek. You’ll find 12 rolling miles of trails that cross wetlands and pass through pine forests. It can be accessed from a parking lot off Concora Road, an easy ride from downtown Boulder Junction. The trail also connects with the Escanaba-Pallette Lake Hiking Trail.
