Northern Wisconsin is an emerging destination for ATVing and UTVing, and Vilas County has now opened its county highways to riders all year long. If you’re planning an ATV and UTV adventure in Boulder Junction, here’s what you need to know.

Where can I ATV or UTV in Boulder Junction?

ATVs and UTVs are allowed on Vilas County highways only in Boulder Junction—Highway H, Highway M, and Highway K. These county highways are open to ATV and UTV traffic year-round.

No Boulder Junction town roads are open to ATV/UTV traffic.

Where can I park my ATV or UTV?

Street parking is available on Main Street in downtown Boulder Junction. Parking is also available in town lots at the Boulder Junction Community Center (5386 Park Street/Highway M), the Boulder Junction Sports & Recreation Park (5358 Park Street/Highway M), and next to Boulder Beer Bar (5509 Highway M).

What are the ATV and UTV regulations?

The state of Wisconsin has many laws in place to keep ATV and UTV riders safe on the trails:

  • No person under 12 may operate an ATV and no person under 16 may operate a UTV
  • Riders born after January 1, 1988, are required to complete a safety certification course and carry a safety certificate
  • Children 12-15 using the ATV/UTV trails must have a safety certificate and be accompanied by an adult
  • Children younger than 18 must wear an ATV/UTV helmet (or motorcycle helmet) and goggles
  • ATV users younger than 12 and UTV users younger than 16 may not operate on a public roadway
  • All UTV passengers must wear safety restraints
  • ATVs/UTVs must always have their headlamps on
