All year

Vilas County’s lettered highways are open to traffic year-round (except for those in the town of Lac du Flambeau), and this includes Highway H, Highway M, and Highway K in Boulder Junction. No Boulder Junction town roads are open to ATV/UTV traffic at this time, but Boulder Junction’s highways connect to communities with public trails, including St. Germain, Arbor Vitae, Mercer, and Land O’ Lakes.

Spring & summer

Once the snow melts and the weather begins to warm up, it’s the perfect time to start planning a trip to northern Wisconsin. ATVers and UTVers headed to Boulder Junction can take a 25-mile trip up County Highway M (which connects to County Highway B) and ride north and east to Land O’ Lakes on the Wisconsin-Michigan border. Riders will experience amazing Northwoods scenery and skirt the shores of Black Oak Lake, considered one of the clearest lakes in Wisconsin.

Fall

Fall colors start to arrive in Boulder Junction and the rest of Vilas County in early to mid-September, usually reaching peak the first week of October (depending on conditions). It’s an amazing time to get out on the highways and trails and marvel at the amazing array of reds, yellows, and oranges in the canopy. Riders looking for a scenic tour can head south from Boulder Junction along County Highway M and take in the views alongside Trout Lake on the way to ATV/UTV trail systems in Arbor Vitae and St. Germain to the south. Or riders can take a longer trip out west following County Highway K and County Highway J to Mercer in neighboring Iron County.

All these routes will take ATVers and UTVers through the heart of downtown Boulder Junction, which is home to restaurants, shops, and great places to stay.
