“A Wintry Mix” of Winter Recreation Opportunities

Boulder Junction transforms into a winter wonderland from December through March. The possibilities for winter recreation are limitless. With snow-blanketed pines, frozen lakes, and endless trails to discover, Boulder Junction is a starting point for miles upon miles of exploration. Below is a “wintry mix” of activities to explore while in the area.
Cross Country Skiing
Kick-kick-glide your way along lakeshores, across glacial moraines, and through dense forest on skis! Bring your own pair, or rent some from from local outfitter Coontail. The locals like to ski Escanaba-Palette Lake Trails and WinMan Trails.
Ice Fishing
Whether you’ve got a pop-up tent, have an ice shack, or just want to brave the weather with your auger in hand. Boulder Junction has an abundance of great lakes for ice fishing. Snowmobiling
Zoom through the trees and across icy lakes to get to your favorite area restaurant or bar on snowmobile! Boulder Junction is the hub for connecting to a number of trails in Vilas County. The Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club takes pride in maintaining 100+ miles of trail in our area to get you from point A to point B. Snowshoeing
Strap on a pair of snowshoes to your boots, grab your poles, and traverse deep woodlands on a number of scenic trails near Boulder Junction. Snowshoeing is a great way to explore what makes the Northwoods special- beautiful scenery and plentiful wildlife. Local favorites include Fallison Lake Nature Trail, Lumberjack Trail system, and Boulder Junction’s Winter Park.
Sledding & Ice Skating
Looking for something to do with the whole family? Consider checking out Boulder Junction’s Winter Park where you’ll find a regulation-size ice skating rink, ice skates to borrow, and a sledding hill for all ages to enjoy!
Fat tire Biking
Snow doesn’t have to mean the end of biking season – fat tire bikes are the perfect way to explore snow covered terrain on two wheels! Fat tire bikes are a blast to ride over snow and soft terrain. If you’ve never ridden one of these bikes, now is your chance. Coontail Adventures offers hourly, daily, and weekly rentals. They are a lot of fun to use anywhere there is snow, including lakes where there’s good ice.
