Fresh snow alert: Don’t miss these winter experiences

February 20, 2019

Snow has arrived in full force in Boulder Junction—now is the time to launch your winter adventure. Whether you’re browsing local galleries or loading your plate at an all-you-can eat fish fry, winter in Boulder Junction has so much to offer. Here are a few winter experiences you need to add to your to-do list.

Find a Friday night fish fry

There isn’t a more classically Northwoods meal than the Friday night fish fry, and when you’re in Boulder Junction, you’ve got lots of tasty options. Local favorites include Gooch’s A-One Bar & Grill, The Guides Inn and Headwaters Restaurant & Tavern.

Hop on a snowmobile

Boulder Junction serves as a great hub for snowmobiling throughout Vilas County and the Northwoods of Wisconsin. The Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club grooms more than 125 miles of trails that take riders through beautiful Northwoods wilderness but also offer easy access to bars, restaurants and lodging in Boulder Junction. Looking for a route to try? Ride the Star Lake loop by following Trail #15 south out of Boulder Junction until you hit Trail #11, which will take you east to Star Lake. Head north on Trail #8, then follow the trail west back to Boulder Junction. See the latest snowmobile trail conditions here.

Take a picture with Gill

You’ve probably seen him outside the Chamber of Commerce building on Highway M/Park Street—it is hard to miss an eight-foot-tall musky, after all. Gill, who was created by local chainsaw artist Jeff Miller, welcomes visitors to Boulder Junction and is a popular stop for a photo op (the chamber building is right on the snowmobile trails, too). If the chamber office is open when you’re there, stop in to talk to the friendly staff and get some insider info on what to see and where to go.

Visit Main Street’s shops

Want to browse Boulder Junction’s downtown shops without the hustle and bustle of summer traffic? Winter is a perfect time to visit and an ideal time to explore Boulder Junction’s shopping options. Run by friendly, welcoming shopkeepers, these stores offer everything from home décor to clothing to souvenirs. Here are just a few of Boulder Junction’s Main Street shops (note that many businesses only offer weekend hours in the winter):
